      Crocheted Heart Earrings

      February 8th, 2009

As a Valentine’s Day gift for my daughter, I decided to attempt to make some heart shaped earrings.  Here’s what I came up with:

      Items needed:

3.5 mm (E) crochet hook (don’t use your favorite, as wire can scrape it up!)

      32 gauge silver wire

Red Seed Beads (about 33 for each earring, plus a few extra just in case)

      2 earring hooks

      Needle nose pliers

Crocheting with wire is exactly the same as normal crocheting.  However, you do need to make sure and not crochet too tight, otherwise you may break the wire.

To add the beads in a single crochet, insert hook , wire over hook and pull up loop, slide one bead over to your hook, wire over hook making sure the bead stays put,and pull through both loops on hook.  You will do this on every single crochet made.

      Heart (make 2):

String up all the beads onto the wire

Row 1: Ch 2, sc 3 into second ch from hook

Row 2: Inc in first, sc, Inc (5 total)

      Row 3: Inc, sc 3, inc (7)

      Row 4: Sc across

Row 5:  Sc, Dc 3 times into next sc (alternate bead placement on the dc, sometimes pulling over the bead on the first wire over, sometimes on the second), sc 3, dc 3 times in next, sc

Bind off and weave in ends.  By gently pulling and tugging, shape the heart.

Take your earring hooks and carefully pull the loop open with your pliers.  Attatch the heart and carefully close up the loop.

Wear your earrings proudly on Valentine’s Day, making everyone “ooh” and “ahh” over your skills =)

Pig and Her Pancake - Free Pattern

      January 8th, 2009

Here she is… Pig from the children’s book If You Give a Pig a Pancake (which I am in no way affiliated with lol), enjoy!  And as always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Pig and Her Pancake (click here for PDF download)

      Items needed:
3.5 mm (E) steel crochet hook
Worsted weight yarn (shown is Lily Sugar ‘n’ Cream Confectionery Colors in Caramel, Lily Sugar ‘n’ Cream Solids in Blue, Pink and Warm Brown)
Small bits of black yarn or embroidery floss
      6 mm black eyes
      Stuffing
      Tapestry needle
Stitch marker to keep track of rows (safety pins or bobby pins work great!)

      Stitch Definitions:

      Sc – single crochet

      Inc – Increase

      Dec – Decrease

      Ch - Chain

*This pattern is worked in a continuous round unless otherwise noted. Make all limbs and ears prior to the head and body so that they can be attached as you work.

Round 1: With brown yarn, ch 2, sc 6 in second ch from hook
Round 2: Inc in each (12)

      Tail:
      Chain 6
Staring at second chain from hook, make 2 sc in each ch space (12 total) this should give you a nice little curly tail. If you would like the curl to be tighter, make 3 sc in some or all of the ch spaces.

      Head
Round 1: With pink yarn, ch2, sc 4 second from hook
Round 2: Inc in each (8)
Round 3: With brown yarn, sc around on outside loop only (8)

Row 4-10 (or desired length): Sc across, ch 1 and turn

Sleeves: Pick up 12 stitches evenly around arm holes and sc 3 rows, repeat on other arm.  Bind off and weave in ends.
To close up the back, you can do one of two things:
1: Simply stitch the two edges together (this might make it harder to get on and off of the pig)
2: Attach a few bits of yarn 1-2 inches long on either side of the sweater enabling you tie the sweater together

      Pancake

Round 1: Using brown, ch 2, sc 6 into second from hook

      Round 7: *Sc 5, inc* 6 times (42)

      Round 8: *Sc 6, inc* 6 times (48)

Slip stitch into next, bind off and weave in ends

      Butter

With yellow yarn, ch 4, sc in second from chain and across, ch 1 and turn (4)

*Sc across, ch 1 and turn* repeat until you have a nice little square

      Syrup

With darker brown, chain until you’ve reached your desired length (I did 50)

Assemble: Either glue or sew the butter and syrup onto the pancake, if you use glue though, make sure it’s kid-friendly!

      Here’s Mouse!

      October 3rd, 2008

Well, it didn’t take me as long as I thought to write up the pattern! For those of you who don’t know, there is a very popular children’s book called If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. This book (and all the other one’s that go in the series) is one of my son’s favorites. Oddly, though, I did not make this mouse with him in mind! It’s going to be a Christmas present for my sister-in-law =) When I asked her if there was anything specific she wanted me to make her for Christmas, she said “toys”…and since she loves this series of books, I decided to give it a shot. Of course now I’ll have to make another one for my son! The whole time I was taking pictures of Mouse, he kept saying “mouse…please!” over and over. Speaking of pictures, we had a little bit of fun with them. Check out my previous post if you’re interested! And now, the pattern (and the download) :

      Items needed:
3.5 mm (E) steel crochet hook

Small pieces of light pink felt (available at most craft stores)
Small bits of light pink yarn or embroidery floss
      6 mm black safety eyes
      Stuffing
      Tapestry needle
Stitch marker to keep track of rows (safety pins or bobby pins work great!)

*This pattern is worked in a continuous round unless otherwise noted. Make all limbs and ears prior to the head and body so that they can be attached as you work.

      Leg (make 2)
Round 1: With brown yarn, ch 2, sc 6 in second ch from hook
Round 2: Inc in each (12)
      Round 3: Sc around
Round 4-7 : With blue yarn, sc around
Bind off leaving a tail for sewing

      Arm (make 2)
Round 1: With brown yarn, ch 2, sc 6 into second ch from hook
Round 2: Inc in each (12)
Round 3: Dec in each (6)
      Round 4-6: Sc around
Bind off leaving a tail for sewing

Ear (make 2, worked back and forth)

      Row 2: Inc 2, ch 1 and turn (4)
Row 3: Inc, sc 2, inc, ch 1 and turn (6)
Row 4: Inc, sc 4, inc, ch 1 and turn (8)
Row 5: Sc across, ch 1 and turn
Row 6: Sc across, bind off leaving a tail for sewing
Cut a small triangle of light pink felt to fit in his ear and glue or sew into place

      Head
Round 1: With brown, ch 2, sc 6 into second from hook
      Round 2: *Sc 1, inc* 3 times (9)
      Round 3: *Sc 2, inc* 3 times (12)
      Round 4: *Sc 3, inc* 3 times (15)
      Round 5: *Sc 4, inc* 3 times (18)
      Round 6: *Sc 5, inc* 3 times (21)
      Round 7: *Sc 6, inc* 3 times (24)

      Round 13: *Sc 1, dec* 6 times (12)
*Sew ears into place, attach eyes and embroider the nose using the picture as a guide then stuff ‘im up!
Round 15: Dec in each, bind off leaving a tail for sewing.

      Body
With brown yarn, ch 13 and slip stitch into first to form a ring

*Attach arms and embroider the overall straps as shown in the picture and then stuff
Round 12: Dec around, bind off and weave in ends
      *Attach legs

      Tail:

Cut 3 strands of brown yarn twice as long as you want the tail (so, if you want the tail 1.5 inches long, cut your strands 3 inches long). Using all three strands, loop them around a crochet stitch in the appropriate area. Pull the ends so that six strands are all the same length and then braid. Tie off at the end and trim excess yarn if needed.

      Cookie (make 2):

Round 1: Using brown, ch 2, sc 6 into second from hook
Round 2: Inc. in each (12)
      Round 3: * Sc 1, inc * 6 times (18)
      Round 4: * Sc 2, inc * 6 times (24)
      Round 5: * Sc 3, inc * 6 times (30)
Round 6: Sc around, slip stitch into next, bind off and weave in ends
Using dark brown yarn, embroider “chips” onto one of the cookies. Sew the two cookies together.

      Santa’s Cookies

      September 29th, 2008

When I was growing up, we had a special plate that we would put cookies for Santa on every Christmas Eve (a tradition I suspect my dad encouraged…after all someone had to eat those cookies!).  The plate always sat beside the fireplace empty until then, which made me wish we could always have cookies on it.  So here is my solution:

Click here for the pdf download!

      Items Needed:

      Worsted Weight Yarn

      3.5 mm (E) hook

      Tapestry needle

      Stuffing

      Cookie:

      Worked in a continuous round

Round 1: Ch 2, sc 6 into second from hook

Round 2: Inc. in each (12)

      Round 3: * Sc 1, inc * 6 times (18)

      Round 4: * Sc 2, inc * 6 times (24)

      Round 5: * Sc 3, inc * 6 times (30)

Round 6: Sc around, slip stitch into next, bind off and weave in ends

Chocolate Sandwich Cookie: Make 2 in black, and 1 in white. Place the white between the blacks and stitch together. *make the center piece light green for a mint sandwich cookie, or use light brown instead of black for a vanilla sandwich cookie*

Chocolate Chip Cookie: Make 2 in light brown. Using a dark brown yarn, stitch “chips” randomly then stitch both cookie pieces together. *leave off the “chips” for a snickerdoodle or sugar cookie*

      Cup:

      Worked in a continuous round

Round 1: Ch 2, sc 6 into second from hook with green yarn

Round 2: Inc. in each (12)

      Round 3: * Sc 1, inc * 6 times (18)

      Round 4: * Sc 2, inc * 6 times (24)

      Round 5: * Sc 3, inc * 6 times (30)

      Round 6: * Sc 4, inc * 6 times (36)

Round 7: Sc around on back post only

Round 8 – 22: Sc around alternating colors as listed below

      8-9: Green

      10-13: Red

      14-16: Green

      17-19: Red

      20-22: Green

Slip stitch into next, bind off and weave in ends

      Milk:

      Worked in a continuous round

Round 1: Ch 2, sc 6 into second from hook with green yarn

Round 2: Inc. in each (12)

      Round 3: * Sc 1, inc * 6 times (18)

      Round 4: * Sc 2, inc * 6 times (24)

      Round 5: * Sc 3, inc * 6 times (30)

Round 6: Sc around, bind off and weave in ends

Assembly: Stuff the cup and place the milk on top, keeping it inside the cup. Stitch into place.
